Road, Utility, & Railroad Bridge Work
Roslyn Road
Project overview
This project was designed to eliminate the Roslyn Road Grade crossing for the Long Island Rail Road.
What made this job complex
The sensitive and complex nature of this job was due in part to its location on Roslyn Road, near municipal offices, the Mineola train station, and Winthorpe Hospital. In addition, we needed to relocate LIRR power + communication lines running along the tracks. One of LIPA's main power system and fiber optic communications lines which runs along Roslyn Road also needed to be relocated. The LIPA line has a working voltage of 345KV. One misstep could have resulted in major power outages for a good part of Long Island. The LIRR tracks that run through this project are the main East/West line for the north shore of Nassau and Suffolk counties.
How Posillico solved it
The LIPA relocation was handled with a customized excavation + support system which included hand-excavation of over 500 feet of power line. The entire LIRR track system was supported and underpinned during the bridge foundation construction utilizing custom designed temporary track supports installed during weekend track outages. After the bridge superstructure was erected adjacent to its final position the LIRR track was again shut down during the weekend and the permanent rail bridge was rolled into final position.
