Posillico Completes Highly Complex Soil Cleanup and Excavation
September, 2008
New York, NY September 2008, Posillico, one of the leading environmental construction companies in the New York Metro area, recently completed remediation of a heavily contaminated project site in Long Island City, Queens, New York. The site was prepared for construction of a mixed use development project. The clean up effort required extremely deep excavation, dewatering and treatment of contaminated groundwater and a comprehensive odor mitigation strategy. This massive undertaking combined to complete one of the most complex soil remediation projects in New York’s history.
To prepare for the large foundation of the mixed use development, over 140 thousand tons of contaminated soil, which extended 40 feet below grade, and perilously close to neighboring buildings required underpinning and careful removal of the adjacent soils. The deep excavation required the capture and treatment of over 200 million gallons of contaminated groundwater. Noxious odors that emanated throughout the site had to be contained via foaming and vapor control structures, which included a large tent that was moved throughout the site and covered over a half acre of property during each remedial phase. The massive enclosure required relocation with a 500-ton hydraulic crane.

MAKING ITS MOVE

There are many contractors in Long Island, N.Y., but Posillico is “definitely the most diverse in (terms of) what we can do,” Vice President of Estimating Mike Trotta declares. Based in Farmingdale, N.Y., the construction company specializes in highway and bridge projects, treatment plants, marine work and environmental remediation.
As it focused on environmental and drilling projects, Posillico says it is evolving from a modestly sized construction company to a larger firm.

Oyster
Bay Clean Up: “No Walk In The Park”
Oyster Bay, NY - June 1,
2007
Since 2003 residents
of Oyster Bay have had limited access to one of their
oldest and most popular parks due to contaminated
soil that posed an environmental risk. During that
time access to The Bethpage Community Park was strictly
limited to paved areas only.
The team given
the responsibility of getting the park cleaned and
able to re-open again was Posillico Environmental.
With roots in Long Island, and a reputation for solving
complex environmental issues, Posillico was tasked
with the major clean-up and restoration effort. Before
on site work began, the town cited 130,000 tons of
hazardous and non-hazardous soils throughout the park
that needed to be excavated. In the early phase of
the project however, Posillico discovered an additional
45,000 tons of soil that needed to be remediated,
bringing the total volume to a whopping 175,000 tons.
